Glove Types: What Are You Using Them For?

Before you look at brands or sizes, work out what you will actually be doing in your gloves. Different types of training call for different gloves.

Bag and pad gloves are designed for hitting heavy bags and focus pads. They tend to have denser foam and a more compact shape. The padding is built to protect your hands during repetitive impact work, and they usually weigh between 10oz and 14oz.

Sparring gloves are bigger and softer. They are designed to protect your training partner as much as they protect you. Most gyms require 16oz gloves for sparring, though lighter fighters sometimes use 14oz. If your gym has specific rules about sparring glove weight, check before you buy.

Competition gloves are thinner and lighter, typically 8oz or 10oz depending on your weight class. You will not need these as a beginner.

Which glove weight is right for you?

Glove sizes are shown in ounces (oz), which describe their weight rather than hand size. Your body weight, hand fit and training type all matter. Try gloves with your hand wraps on, and check with your coach before buying gloves for sparring.

  • 8–10 oz: Commonly used for bag and pad work by lighter users. Not a beginner’s sparring choice.
  • 12 oz: An option for bag work, pads and general fitness training.
  • 14 oz: A heavier option for general training. Suitability for partner work depends on your gym’s rules.
  • 16 oz: Commonly required for adult sparring, although your coach should confirm the right weight for you.
